Chatham Transit Network(CTN) is the County's community transportation provider, offering public transportation around Chatham County, in the towns of Siler City and Pittsboro, to Chapel Hill and back, and to medical appointments (click here for information on CTN's Project Health Rides).

Chapel Hill Transit(CHT) operates a weekday bus route from Pittsboro to UNC-Chapel Hill.  The fare for the CTN and CHT fixed routes is $3 each way, or $65 for a 30-day pass, which can be purchased at the Pittsboro Town Hall, Chapel Hill Town Hall or Piggly Wiggly on East St in Pittsboro.  A free park-and-ride for these routes is available at the Lowe's Home Improvement in Pittsboro on US 15-501 at US 64.
  • www.gotriangle.org, public transportation trip planner for the Triangle Region
  • UNC Commuter Alternatives Program(CAP): Residents who work or attend school at UNC-Chapel Hill can park their cars at a Town of Chapel Hill & UNC-sponsored park-and-ride lot on US 15-501, just north of Old Lystra Road, and ride the CCX routebus to the campus.  The parking and shuttle are free, but you must get a permit from UNC-Chapel Hill for the Commuter Alternatives Program.

CARPOOLS OR VANPOOLS:

Several assisted living communities in the county provide transportation for their residents to visit stores, doctors and other locations around the county.

REGIONAL & INTERNATIONAL
ROADS & HIGHWAYS

Unlike most states, county governments in North Carolina have NO responsibility for maintaining or building roads and bridges. This means that Chatham County cannot patch potholes or take care of mowing along the roads.

The State of North Carolina through the N.C. Department of Transportation is in charge of all primary and secondary roads, except for those that are privately-owned or municipal (town or city) roads.

To contact the local DOT office in charge of maintaining and mowing primary and secondary roads in Chatham County, call 336-629-1423. Chatham County is fortunate to be located in the heart of the state and is easily accessible via several major federal highways:
  • US 64 is an east-west highway with divided four lanes nearly the entire stretch. It cuts through Pittsboro and Siler City, connecting both to the Triangle and the Triad. It joins NC 49 in Asheboro, which takes you to Charlotte.
  • US 15/501 is a north-south highway and is four lanes all the way to Chapel Hill, but also links the county to Sanford where it connects with US 1.
  • US 421 is a divided four-lane highway connecting Siler City and other parts of the county to Greensboro and Sanford, where it connects with US 1.
  • US 1 is a major north-south, four-lane artery of the state. It provides easy access to and from the southeastern part of the county around Moncure.

The following state highways also are important connectors:

  • NC 87 connects Pittsboro to the Burlington area where it meets up with Interstate 85. It also tracks 15/501 south of Pittsboro to Sanford.
  • NC 902 runs from Pittsboro to Bear Creek and Goldston, connecting all of these to Randolph County and US 220.
  • NC 751 connects the eastern edge of the county to Durham, Research Triangle Park and Interstate 40.
